School books for the world's newest country

DFID - UK Department for International Development posted a photo:

Britain will provide school books to 2 million children in South Sudan – the world's newest country, after it gained independence in 2011. The textbooks were launched by Minister for International Development Lynne Featherstone during a visit to the country's capital Juba.

Lynne Featherstone met with the Deputy Minister for Education, the Regional Minister for Education and a young woman who is currently learning masonry skills at the Sipri Alternative Education Centre, Juba, South Sudan.

The Minister for International Development said:

"I spoke with young women and girls about the challenges of being in education. Many of the girls say that society views them as ‘property’ and ‘not worth educating’ – so its very encouraging to see them rising above these barriers and learning skills such as masonry."
